We've been busy working on weeding on the farm this past week and so far we're managing to stay ahead of the weeds this year! Our full time, seasonal employee Caitlyn has been outstanding and without her help we would definitely be behind on the weeds as well as other tasks on the farm.
The heat and humidity has had an impact on the farm. Some of our romaine has started to bolt. That is, some of the romaine is starting to form seed heads and is no longer fit for sale. That's somewhat expected when we have multiple days of 90 degree or more heat. Similarly, our arugula has bolted. Luckily, we have more successions of lettuce coming and the heat has abated for now. Other crops like sweet corn, melons and green beans love the heat and have really grown a lot in the past few days.
We have a few new crops coming in soon. We picked the first of our snap peas this season which only amounted to enough for a meal for Lara and I but there's more on the way! We've also picked a few strawberries and they are AMAZING! They're so good that I refuse to buy store bought strawberries out of season because they just aren't good. We should have some strawberries available next week.
Finally, our CSA season starts in earnest next week. We're excited! Our CSA program is so central to our farm that it feels weird not having our CSA. We're looking forward to meeting all of our CSA members in the next week and can't wait to share our wonderful produce with you.
