D&V Organics CSA Week 14
We are moving right along into our planting schedule for the Fall. Last week we seeded a little over 10,000 specialty radicchio for the late Fall harvest, a half acre of baby greens and radishes (which should be ready to harvest in 3 weeks), a few different types of turnips, rutabaga, choy sum, mustard greens and beets. In addition, this week we have around 15,000 plants to put in the ground including radicchio, lettuces, broccoli, cauliflower, swiss chard, escarole and frisée. Another round of seeding is in order this week, which will include spinach, more lettuces, bok choy, scallions, escarole, fava beans and carrots. Each week, right through the end of the month, we'll be seeding new plantings of various types of greens. The end of the season is approaching, albeit still a few months away, so our planting frequency increases as the days shorten and the temperatures begin to drop. Plants will grow slower and slower the later we get into the season. Our goal is to have a large selection of produce at maturity by the middle of November when it's cold enough outside to nearly cause the produce to stop growing. At that time, the outdoors is like a giant refrigerator, and we are under no pressure to harvest before the produce gets too old and beyond mature. We are excited to be switching gears back into a tight weekly planting schedule and all the fresh greenery in the coming weeks!
Enjoy,
Derek & Vicky
