D&V Organics CSA Week 16
September has arrived and our first Fall vegetable seeding is growing fast. It's looking like next week we'll be back to harvesting bunched radishes and some baby salad greens. In a couple more weeks we will move on to harvesting lettuce, bok choi, turnips and some additional greens. We are excited for the season transition (mainly from the culinary perspective), but as we get back into a more diverse product selection, it means a lot more skilled labor is involved because of all the hand-work associated with harvesting all the different crops. Our labor pool is shrinking somewhat, as a few employees are returning back to their universities this week, but we are working through a new list of applicants and hope to employ some skilled laborers for the Fall by the end of this week. This week we'll be getting more ground ready for another round of transplants to go out. After spending a few weeks in the greenhouse, our little seedlings are put on wagons and brought outside to "harden off" and get exposed to a less pampered environment. Out on the wagons, the plants are exposed to wind, direct sunlight, and get a little less watering than they do in the greenhouse. The plant stems become more sturdy when exposed to the wind and the plants "harden off". After about a week or so on the wagons, the seedlings are planted into the field where they will continue growing for another 30-60 days until they are ready to be harvested. On the wagons for planting this week are sprouting cauliflower, sprouting broccoli, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, radicchio, napa cabbage, baby bok choi, swiss chard and parsley. In the field this week, we'll be directly seeding a few crops into the ground which include radishes, baby greens, turnips and choy sum.
Enjoy,
Derek & Vicky
