Farm Happenings for September 3rd

Posted on August 29th, 2019 by Daybreak Growers Alliance

We're excited about the beginning of the new Farm Share Season. All of the fruits of our labor are coming in from the fields and getting packed into your share boxes, and they're looking great!

As you are aware auto-renew ran on accounts, if you are on a bi-weekly delivery schedule please check out your account to be sure deliveries are arranged the way you would like them. If you put Mid-Summer shares on hold you can contact farmers@daybreakgrowersalliance.com and let us know when you would like to reschedule those deliveries.

If you're just joining us there are a few things to remember: bring a cooler or bag to carry your share home in, leave the boxes at the site; meat shares will be in a cooler at the delivery site; if you are unable to pick up your share you must notify us in advance of delivery, public site pick up is limited to the times stated, you will forfeit your share if you do not arrive during those times.

Update from Bahner Farm

Here at Bahner Farm; one of our favorite crops to grow are tomatoes. We grow about 1,500 tomato plants in two 90’x36’ unheated hoophouses.

We start growing the tomatoes in early March, and they grow in our heated seedling greenhouse for about six weeks before transplanting them into the hoophouses in late April. About half of our tomatoes are grafted onto special rootstock to help improve their disease resistance and vigor. All spring we are pruning and trellising the tomato plants carefully, training them up their sisal twine trellis strings.

If we’re lucky we get to start eating ripe cherry tomatoes in early July. Not only are these one of Mike and my favorites, but our kids Lizzy and Nicky love them too. They often like to earn a little extra money helping to pick tomatoes on our harvest days. We pick our tomatoes three times a week for optimal ripeness and flavor.

We hope you love our vine ripened heirloom tomatoes as much as we do!
