Happy November Farmbox customers! We are so thankful to all of you as our share membership continues to grow despite the warmer harvest months behind us. We are hard at work recruiting new farms and vendors to the Alliance to keep you well fed all winter long.
Heads up that while we won't be offering turkeys, we will have an ABUNDANCE of Thanksgiving fixings, add-ons and special treats to ensure you feast like kings and queens this holiday season. (And we will have whole chickens and pot pies for those of you looking to bite off a little less poultry prep this Thanksgiving.) Be on the lookout for Tandem Bakery pies and baked treats, heirloom cranberries, cheeses and charcuteries for your pre-supper snack boards and much more! We will also have an exciting announcement about expanded delivery options coming up next week.
The last field plantings have happened (garlic and over wintered onions), successions of greens are underway in greenhouses and the root crop and winter squash harvest is coming in strong and beautiful. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us at farmers@daybreakgrowersalliance.com with feedback and suggestions of Maine owned locally grown businesses we should incorporate in the Alliance!
This week look for Nomad Pasta products – organic, small-batch pasta, made with love in Maine; Casco Bay Creamery butter smoked by Crooked Face Creamery; and baking Prix de Diane cheese from Lakin's Gorges!
Update from Foxfire Farm
It's been a whirlwind of a first season here at Foxfire Farm, where I am working on getting to know a new piece of land and a new community in Palermo. A lot of my efforts have gone towards improving the soil health and fertility of a rocky, depleted hayfield. My approach has been to implement extensive cover cropping, rotating chickens and pigs through pasture and yes, pulling a lot of rocks by hand, which is a sort of right of passage for New England farmers. Thanks to the generous rainfall this season and remarkably warm fall weather, my one acre vegetable plot yielded an abundant harvest of fall storage crops like winter squash, cabbage, kohlrabi and carrots. It's been great to be working with DGA, where I will be sending some celeriac for the farm share this week!
