Farm Happenings 11/15/21: Modified Holiday Schedule / Introducing Nomad Pasta

Hello Farm Box subscribers, We just added Apple Shares and Fermented Food Shares to our add-on share selection, you can sign up here for regular deliveries of these shares - weekly or every other week - or you can select a one-time delivery to give it a try. This week we've got a great selection of fresh greens, roots, squash, cranberries, apples, cheeses, meats, pasta and more . . . it's never too early to start stocking up for your holiday meal!

We're happy to announce that starting November 23 & 24 and beyond Daybreak will be offering Home Delivery of Farm & Butcher Boxes to the Portland area through our friends at CarHop!! If you're interested in home delivery you can check if your delivery address is eligible in your account - select change location - check to see if Home Delivery is an option.

Modified Holiday Schedule - please read: This week we start working on a modified customization schedule. Butcher Box customization for the week of Thanksgiving (November 23 & 24 deliveries) will start on November 10 and end at 3pm on Thursday, November 11 so customize early when you receive your email! Daybreak's growers have selected their favorite Thanksgiving picks for your boxes.

Delivery week of November 23 & 24: All Farm & Butcher Boxes will be delivered the week of Thanksgiving on Tuesday, November 23 or Wednesday, November 24. If you receive deliveries on Thursday or Friday please check the DELIVERIES tab in your account for your delivery day, we’ll send you an email and the delivery day information will be in your customization and delivery confirmation emails.

The customization period for November 23 & 24 Farm Boxes will start TUESDAY, November 16 and end WEDNESDAY, November 17 at 10:30pm (a day earlier than usual).

We’ve got you covered from your staples like potatoes, squash and apples, to holiday treats like frost sweetened winter salad greens, sweet potatoes, Brussels Sprouts, sausage for stuffing, cranberries for sauce to specialty cured meats, artisanal cheeses, and local crackers for a beautiful appetizer plate. We encourage you to act quick to ensure the widest selection. Start stocking up this week and customize early next week!

Introducing Nomad Pasta

Daybreak Growers is excited to welcome Nick & Noelle of Nomad Pasta to our growing Alliance! We hope you are excited about eating delicious locally made organic small batch pastas all winter long. 

Q. Welcome Nomad Pasta! Where in Maine are you located?

We make our pasta in Belfast, a beautiful little town on the Maine coast. It's about 20 miles north of Camden and 60 miles southwest of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Our commercial kitchen is housed inside the United Farmers Market building, overlooking Belfast Harbor.
 
Q. Are all of your ingredients organic?
A. Yes. We use a blend of organic semolina and organic wheat flour, and water. There are no other ingredients or additives in our pasta.
 
Q. You are offering 7 different handmade pastas through Daybreak! We are psyched. For our customers cooking at home, how many servings is 12 ounces?
A. Four ounces is a generous serving, so 12 ounces will serve three people or more.

Q. How did you get in to pasta making?
A.We have always loved making pasta at home, but had never considered turning it into a business until the spring of 2019. We had a rare opportunity to travel extensively throughout Italy, and were so inspired along the way by the food and culture that we wanted to bring some part of it back to Maine with us. We started Nomad Pasta soon after.

Q. Your pasta is "bronze died" what does this mean?
A. Each pasta shape has its own die, a metal mold that gives it its form and texture. Bronze dies give pasta a rough surface perfect for holding sauces.
 
Q. And you slow dry your pasta. What does slow-dried mean? Why is it better?
A. The best way to dry pasta is low and slow, to preserve the flavor, texture, and nutrition of the wheat. We use modern drying machines to carefully control the humidity and temperature of the pasta throughout the drying process. You'll taste the difference.
