Welcome to our special 6 weeks of pre-winter farm share. You would think we would be able to wind things down here on the farm. Much to most peoples surprise the change of season only means a change in duties. Michelle continues her micro green work with the added twist of caring for winterizing bulbs, hanging baskets and other potted plants. Myda and Francisco are busy inventing a plastic barrier idea. Gail observed the technique while visiting another greenhouse. It should keep the cold wind and draft from the bottom of greenhouses 3 and 4 which have roll down sides. Maurice and Gail have been busy mowing dead veggies and then tilling their remains into the ground. The above photo reflects the result. The Brussels sprouts are the only vegetable allowed to stay in the field. They are still producing....and who doesn't like Brussels sprouts besides Gail's mother, Erlene? Kaylen is learning about inventory controls while Jade and Paige get to do fun jobs like sort squash and learn how to file all that paper work that gets put off when one needs to be in the field. We can see one corner of Maurice's desk now! Stay tuned to see what's up next....have a great week.

Early Winter Season week 1 of 6

About the farm
DragSmith Farms is a 104-acre Certified Organic Produce Farm located just north of Barron, WI along the pristine Yellow River. About 34 years ago Maurice and Gail bought the farm that has been in Gail's family 120 years. DragSmith comes from a blending of Gail's maiden name, Dragseth, and our shared last name, Smith. We did this to signify the new and old and to create a bit of mystery.
We grow approximately 30 acres of produce that we market along with honey maple syrup and other products from neighboring farms. We sell to some of the finest restaurants and food co-ops in Minnesota and Wisconsin. As a certified organic grower, we utilize all of the regulations required for organic certification and in fact go the extra mile to preserve our farm and our environment.
