Early Winter Season 3 of 6

Posted on November 22nd, 2020 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Good day everyone.  Greetings to you and your families.  It is wise to make that phone call you keep putting off for a more convenient time. Gail made one of those put off phone calls last week...it was great.  A friend in New Mexico.  Her mother, my mother's best friend from way back, passed away in Portland, Oregon.  As always since both of us gals are hunters the conversation drifted into hunting like we do any other time, going back to matters at hand as we each are able to speak without voices breaking up in sadness.

Traditions are essential for stability.  Over the many years that Maurice and Gail were treatment foster home parents, traditions that we started among our kids were the glue that held us together. This farm turns into a gun deer hunting shack every year.....until this one.  Hunting, sharing stories, food, sleeping spaces and laughter were all put aside.  Usually there are 10-12 of us.  This year only 4 and they drove in separate cars, never came into the house and left as soon as darkness arrived. So far only one deer was harvested.  Definitely down from the usual 4-8.  Our vegetable crops could be in trouble next year at this rate!

Gail did have some fun this week.  The above picture was taken of Daryl ( the name for the 6-wheeler). She hauls pine boughs for wreaths just fine.  Over the river and through the woods. (We are already at Grandma's house).  The "Produce Squad" will be learning how to make beautiful, creative wreaths this week.  If anyone is interested we are setting up a temporary store in Greenhouse 3 for Christmas buying.  Christmas trees, wreaths, locally produced items, houseplants (lots of succulents), patio holiday pots etc.  The plan at the moment is to open after Thanksgiving.  Hope to see you there.  Even though it is mostly outside and social distancing will be easy, masks are required.  Stay safe.
