Farm Happenings for July 4-10, 2021

Posted on July 4th, 2021 by Marnie Chown

Things are really starting to ramp up in the greenhouses now!!

We will have the first of the beefsteaks available this week, more cherry tomatoes and slicers too! The large planting of basil is big enough to harvest from now and the zucchinis are coming into their own as well!

We have arugula and green onions (but only a few this week) back in the line-up, more cukes, lots of lettuce of course, and even some flowers now!

We harvest our tomatoes before they are completely ripe.

Perfectly ripe and juicy tomatoes do not transport well, so harvesting them when they are still firm ensures that they get to you in good condition!

We recommend storing tomatoes at room temperature so that they will continue to ripen into their full flavourful/juicy selves. They should not take long to redden up and you'll be able to enjoy them at your preferred ripeness.

Other tasks we do on the farm at this point in the season include lots of weeding, hilling the potatoes and checking for (and squishing by hand) potato beetles, setting traps for the cucumber beetles in greenhouse 2, continually trellising and tying tomatoes, weed whacking encroaching wild parsnip, lots of mowing and of course the weekly harvest/wash/pack/delivery routine. It's a good thing we have an awesome team because there are so many jobs to stay on top of!!
