Week 3 ~ Fall CSA
We love reading the farmers' almanac, since it is more often right than most weather reports these days. We also love weather lore, or sayings that have been passed down to predict weather patterns. Here are some for your enjoyment:
Warm October, cold February.
As the weather in October, so it will be in March.
If October brings much frost and wind, then January and February will be mild.
When birds and badgers are fat in October, a cold winter is expected.
These are just a few of our favorites. Our ancestors paid a lot more attention to the changes in seasons, the weather patterns and shifts in animal behavior to better predict the coming weather. I think many of us are too distracted these days to pay attention to nature and her cues. I challenge you to see if the birds are fattening up this month! :)
This week we have kale, turnip greens and the very beginnings of our broccoli crop coming in. We also have some radishes starting to make their appearance. Don't forget to stock up on your pantry items...tomato juice is wonderful as a soup base or just to use as flavoring. Honey is always something that we like to have on hand for soothing cups of tea. Maple syrup is a must for Saturday morning pancakes or waffles...or to top off oatmeal! Our satsuma jelly is such a sweet treat - and they are cute enough to give as gifts!
We have pumpkins and mums available for delivery as well...
Have a wonderful week, friends!
