We are trucking right along this week! Eggplant are making their first appearance, the hot peppers are beginning to ripen in the field and greenhouse, and the tomatoes are coming off in droves. With a week of great weather ahead of us there is everything to be excited about!
Speaking of excitement, we will be featuring a summer favorite this week, sweet corn grown by our neighbors! Raised all natural, without the use of any unwanted chemicals. Now, we know corn has been a tricky crop to navigate in the past decade or so with all of the controversy surrounding GMO crops. Our neighbors grow two types of sweet corn, both are hybrid varieties. Hybrid seeds are produced through selective breeding. Two lines of genetically stable parent plants (each possessing a desirable trait) are grown in isolation and pollination is performed by hand or under other controlled conditions, seeds are then harvested from the fruit of these plants and sold as F1 hybrid seeds. On the other hand GMO seeds are produced through genetic manipulation of plant DNA. Typically things like pesticides, supplemental vitamins and even animal genes are added to the DNA of the selected crop. Typically GMO crops are sterile and cannot produce viable seed for the following season.
In other news we will be moving the location of our downtown CSA pickup site from Heathen's Feral Public House to the Vancouver Farmer's Market. The new location comes with a new pickup window as well, 10 am - 2 pm (if you are a senior you are welcome to pickup during Senior's Hour). We started back at the market this past weekend and it will keep us spread much less thin if we can consolidate pickup with market days. Thank you so much for your understanding!
