Farm Happenings for October 26, 2022

Posted on October 24th, 2022 by Kelly Peters

Welcome to week 23 of the 2022 Flat Tack Farm CSA program!

It's the final week of our regular season CSA and it's come just in time for the weather to start telling us to bundle up and stay dry/warm.  Before the rains we hustled last week to get all of the winter squash, potatoes and other dry sensitive items into storage.  We harvested all of the pumpkins and squash from the field and are curing them in our little seedling house.  This week brings an abundance of winter squash to choose from.  You'll get an assortment of varieties based on weight.  So a small ($3.50) squash could be a delicata, acorn, small butternut, or kuri squash.  A medium ($7) squash could be a larger sized butternut, pumpkin, black futsu or Kabocha squash.  A large ($13) squash would be a large sized pumpkin or winter banana squash.  We'll mix it up if you order multiple squash.  Also- if you'd like a specific type, just email us before Wednesday at noon and we'll get that into your share :) You can also come out to the farm on Thursday afternoon (4-6 pm) or Friday to pick out your own pumpkins and squash.

As the season comes to an end, we shift to starting to put the farm to "bed" for the winter.  This consists of pulling out or mowing old crops, rolling up drip irrigation lines, pulling landscape fabric and spreading cover crop seeds.  We will also be tractoring the chickens through different areas to help clean up and fertilize the fields.  Especially the squash areas where we had a lot of Squash Bugs this year.  They'll help us eat the bugs and left overs squash in the field.

The only thing left to plant this year is garlic!  We usually get our garlic in the ground around the beginning of November and mulch it thoroughly to protect it from the frosts.  If you'd like to lend a hand planting garlic- please let us know and we'll contact you when we're ready to get it in the ground.

We will be keeping the farm fridge stocked with eggs and veggies as they're available throughout the winter.  You can find the fridge at the farm (take a left towards the parking lot) and the fridges are located underneath the white car port structure.

There is also one more final harvest box full of goodies that you can still purchase!  If you haven't signed up for this final harvest box, you can still do so!  It will have lots of storage crops to stock you up for the autumn and holiday season.  To sign up head to https://www.harvie.farm/farm/flat-tack-farm/signup

We hope you have all thoroughly enjoyed the farm offerings this season and thank you so much for supporting the farm this season!  We'll be sending out a survey in the next week, please help us by letting us know your experience this season.  This helps us plan for next year!

Thank you so much for supporting locally grown!

With gratitude,

Your farmers,

Kelly, Patrick, & Spencer
