Farm Happenings for May 4, 2022

Posted on May 1st, 2022 by Kelly Peters

Welcome to the 2022 Flat Tack Farm CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program!

Read on for tips and tricks to get the most out of your farm share this season.  At the bottom of this email will be product highlights for this week.

Our mission and hopes are that we can help our community enjoy locally grown, fresh and nutritious produce! We thank you so much for your support this season and commend you for choosing to help support a movement that not only creates health for you and your family, but also tends to the land by supporting small farms that use regenerative agricultural practices. As a reminder, please wash your produce prior to consuming. We do wash most things at the farm to cool them down from the field and get the majority of dirt off of them, however a second rinse never hurts!

Here are some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your share this season:

For some of you, this will be your first time using the Harvie.farm online CSA shares.

Step 1.) To make sure you are getting what you like most from the farm- make sure to set your preferences using your online profile. https://harvie.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360021794754-How-do-preferences-work-

The Harvie system uses an advanced algorithm that "fills" your boxes according to what you like. By setting preferences, you can rest assured you'll be getting more of what you want. That being said- you can always change it up!!!

Step 2.) Every week you will get an email to "customize your share". You have a ~2-day period to make changes to your box, swap items, add on additional items or even reschedule your share if you're out of town. https://harvie.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001667414-How-Swaps-and-Extras-Work

For more details on how to customize your box click this link: https://harvie.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/1260802865550-Customize-Your-Share-Version-2

Step 3.) You will get an email reminder to pick up your share on either Wednesday (for Portland) or Thursday (for Vancouver). This reminder will also share address details of your pick-up location.

***Please make sure to bring your own bag/box to pack your produce into. Your share comes in a white bin with your name on a label. These bins must stay at the pick-up site. After you find your share, please pack it into your own bag and stack your bin underneath the table.

And finally, from your Harvie Dashboard you can do lots of things like change your delivery dates, update your credit card on file, view charges or past deliveries, and access farm resources. As a member of our CSA Program, you will receive lots of different veggies and fruits this season. The picture above includes some great storage tips for the most common veggies. Included below is a link with even more details and storage tips from Zenger Farm in Portland, OR. https://e154c453-812d-41f4-b291-a1c967fe2847.filesusr.com/ugd/dbb9c6_172c5c5747b947269b2cd43305f56314.pdf

Product Highlights:

This spring we have lots of beautiful greens from arugula to lettuce and one of our favorites- Mizuna!  Mizuna is great eaten in salads or lightly braised with some dressing.  It has a mild flavor and is related to mustard greens.

We've also got some overwintered carrots that are great for cooking.  They're not quite as crisp as a spring grown carrot, but they are sweet and tasty.

Another favorite is Hakurei Turnips, or salad turnips. They are best eaten raw, sliced in salads or dipped in hummus.  You can also cook the greens!

You will have until May 3rd at 10 pm to make swaps on items in your share or add in additional items like a lb. of ground beef from Windy River Livestock, Mushrooms, Flat Tack Farm hot sauces and chili salts, or Organic Hazelnuts from Lackner Family Farm.

You're always welcome to contact us by sending an email if you have any questions.

We look forward to seeing/meeting everyone!

Your farmers,

Kelly & Patrick
