Welcome to week 9 of the 2022 Flat Tack Farm CSA program!
What's Happening?!
We snuck off to coast over the weekend to celebrate our 8th anniversary! It was a nice little getaway and we really enjoyed some time in the water and hanging out with a friends also. It was a bit windy on the beach, but we definitely enjoyed a reprieve from the heat. It seems summer has come overnight right at the solstice, finally!!! We ran almost all of the irrigation last week to prepare for the heat wave. We use drip irrigation to conserve water and reduce erosion, but it takes a bit of work to pull out all of the lines and get them set up. Each bed uses between 2-4 lines and we have over 150 beds that we cultivate, that's 300-450 lines total! Quite a task to say the least.
Product Highlights
This week we have some new items coming up: Beets and Little Gem lettuces (a mini romaine type). The Napa Cabbages and Kohlrabi are just starting to size up as well. We're just starting to harvest some of the broccoli raab or Broccolini as some people call it. When we only have a small amount of random items we will sometimes create a "surprise" share item. If you choose that item this week, it is a farmers choice surprise and you may get broccolini, summer squash, or other items.
The shallot scapes are also a new items this week. They have a nice mild shallot flavor with a sweetness to them. You can prepare them just like a garlic scape, except that they are hollow. They go great chopped up and paired with eggs or in a stir fry.
Other Reminders
We also wanted to remind everyone that we are going to be taking July 10-31st off to focus on farm fall preparation. We've always struggled with getting our spring beds turned over and ready to plant fall crops on time when we're doing markets and harvesting constantly. This season, we built in a little summer break to help us with these tasks. Everyone should have those dates "skipped" or not showing on your delivery schedule. Lyndsay of Sprout and Blossom Farm will still be hosting a booth at the Vancouver Farmers Market for those wanting to still get local farm grown produce. She usually shares a booth with us and will be at the same spot we are located in. Booth number 55 on Ester Short park side of the street (for those who haven't visited us yet).
