Good afternoon everyone!
I am hoping everyone has found a way to stay as cool as possible during this unprecedented heat wave. We are grateful to have our electricity working to keep ourselves as cool as possible, as well as fans for our hoophouses! We grow many crops that grow well in cool conditions, as we usually have 40 degree nights during the summer. So now our issue is excessive heat on these heat sensitive crops! We decided to use our low tunnel system that is used in the Spring to help our first crops get a head start, but with the cloth used only as a roof, and the sides left open. We are hoping this will shade the plants enough so they do not bolt. Kale, Chard, Broccoli, Lettuce, Beets, Kohlrabi, Napa cabbage and Radishes all prefer our usual cool nights. We had 5 low tunnels, and Jim purchased additional poles to make 6 more tunnels. We got most of them up yesterday, and the last two today. The attached picture is of our shade tunnels, hoping they work!
We have been without internet, so I have been unable to send the customization email. More crops are coming ready! Look for bunching onions, Napa Cabbage, our third variety of Bok Choy and Sweet Sugar Snap Peas in the next few weeks!
Earlier in the week, I was thinking of other things I wanted to mention to you all this week, but the heat situation has superseded all those thoughts!
