It's been windy for a week here at Perigee, but the flowers don't seem to mind. 'Orange Wonder' snapdragons are taking center stage at the moment, alongside the electric Nicotiana 'Lime Green,' a flowering tobacco that releases its intoxicating fragrance most strongly after dusk. Expect to see both of these in shares this week, in addition to perhaps the odd cosmos, zinnia or dahlia, which are just starting to bloom now. The cheery extravagance of the snaps contrasts sharply with the more muted tones and simple shape of one of my all time favorite flowers: Rudbeckia. I started this old-fashioned standard from seed last year, and have patiently been waiting for the plants to really start producing. Now that they are, I couldn't be happier; the flowers sit atop long, strong stems and last over a week in a vase, looking brand new. I'll be at Frey Family Farm again on Wednesday 2-6 and will have some rudbeckia with me if you want to get your hands on some. I look forward to seeing you!
