Good evening everyone!
I hope everyone is having a great week. I want to let you know that I need to change the customization cut-off time for our shares. I will be sending you the emails from now on on Fridays, and we will cut off the customization period Monday morning at 6:30. With more vegetables coming ready for harvest, we are finding we need more time to get them harvested and packaged for you for your Tuesday or Wednesday shares. I am sorry if this is an inconvenience for anyone. I am hoping by adding Friday night and Saturday to the customization period, I am giving you time to make any changes you wish.
We got rain today!!! Close to 0.25 inches! I know it is nowhere what is needed to combat the many forest fires in the PNW, but I am grateful for it today!
We will start green beans in some shares this week. There are not yet enough on for all members to receive beans, so we will put them on a rotation so everyone gets some. We have 12 beds of beans, so we should have plenty! Broccoli is still coming on strong, so look for more in this coming week shares.
Some members are every other week subscribers, so I want to include the information I included in last week's letter regarding the quality of the spring mix and the butterhead leaves. This was during the week of July 26th.
* If you were in the share of the week of July 26th, I want to let you know that we had a lettuce struggle. The butterhead lettuce became bitter before bolt stage, most likely due to the heat. If you had it listed in your share, we substituted with either Romaine leaves, or Romaine head lettuce and did not harvest the butterhead. In addition, one of our spring mix beds grew too large too fast, also most likely from the heat. As a result, there were some pieces of dead lettuce mixed in with the good lettuce leaves. I worked to get out the dead pieces, but I ran out of time to get it as clean as I would like. The lettuce grows close together, and with the heat, grew more quickly than usual and then the individual leaves were crowding out each other. If you were in that weeks' shares, I will be placing a $3.00 credit on your account to use to purchase extras at anytime. We work hard to provide you with the best quality produce we can, but I feel particularly the spring mix did not meet my quality standards. Spring Mix is one of our signature crops, so I especially don't like that it was not at its best. This week we had a new crop of romaine heads and/or the other bed of Spring Mix in the shares.
Stephanie is introducing nasturtiums this week! The description follows.
Herbal News and Upcoming Harvests
Greetings CSA members! Ready this week for harvest amongst the young medicinal herb plants are nasturtium flowers and leaves. The leaves and flowers of nasturtium pack a spicy punch that will not only enliven any meal you garnish them with, but also provide immune-boosting benefits and nutrients such as vitamin C, manganese and iron. Nasturtium flowers and leaves will be available this week in compostable containers for $5.00 each, while 1 bunch of holy basil or tulsi is available for $3.00 per bunch. Stay tuned for more herbal updates and harvests!
Thanks everyone and have a wonderful weekend! We appreciate your support!
