Gravel Road Farm News June 18th, 2021

Posted on June 18th, 2021 by Brigid Ferkett

After weeks of barely a drop of rain and hot hot temperatures, we received a 2 inch downpour all night on Thursday. Not ideal but we’ll take it. The cool evenings are a major win and allows us to cool down the farmhouse overnight. Plus we can cook hot meals and not be sweating! We love to make simple dishes and like bok choy over rice, and asparagus over pasta this time of year.

We are still planting many things, like more lettuce, more melons, napa cabbage, fresh kale seedlings, our weekly batch of sunflowers, and all of the winter squashes. We plant everything by hand down on the ground, or with a standing planter called a Potti-putki. We are harvesting some items every day, and some once a week, it depends on the weather. The cucumbers get picked every other day, in the early morning, or evening once it cools down. The lettuce gets picked two or three times a week, along with the swiss chard and the bok choy.

We have an electric golf cart that we use to get around our farm, to carry our equipment, plants, and harvests. It is affectionately known as Carito (little car.) It is easy to use and quick for doing farm work. We can fit the whole family on it, including the dog. We just have to remember to plug it in to charge every three days.

Market List: Salad Turnips, Garlic Scapes, Cucumbers, Swiss Chard, Bok Choy, Head Lettuce, Arugula mix, Carrots, Beets, Radishes, Peony Bouquets, Grass Fed Lamb Cuts

New items on the horizon: snap peas, zucchini, kohlrabi, basil.

Reminder: Strawberry Fest is tomorrow, June 19th, and so downtown will be busy. It will be taking place on Jefferson Street on the south side of Badger. We hope you have time to stop at the farm market at its temporary location on Fulton Street, one block down from Main, across from Kwik Trip. We are there from 9-1pm. Thanks for your support.
