Welcome to week 12 of the CSA. There will be 3 or 4 more boxes for the bi-weekly shares depending on what week you started. Harvest is at its peak right now, so there are a lot of notes from the field. Flower bouquets go for one more week and that is the end.
We are including locally grown seedless table grapes this week. These are different from what you would find in the grocery store. They are grown in Iola by John and Mary Makovec and the variety is Somerset. These are not organic.
Honeydew melons are ready. They are pale green inside, sweet and juicy. Goes great with any other melons we have or just by themselves.
Sweet Peppers are ripe! They are sweeter now that they have fully turned color to bright yellow, orange, and red.
Bagged turnips. This is the same variety of turnip we offered earlier in the season, but do not have tops on them anymore.
Poblanos are hot peppers ready this week, great for roasting, or grilling, and stuffing. They are very dark green and have a point on the end. Be careful because they can vary in hotness, sometimes they are super hot.
Sauce tomatoes are also known as roma tomatoes. They are drier and have less seeds than slicing tomatoes. We have a lot and they will be available now and for the next 2- 3 weeks only. If you have a freezer, you can get a box and freeze them whole in ziploc bags for canning later. We often do this because we have more time to cook tomato sauce in October.
On the horizon: spaghetti squash, leeks, rutabaga...
