Gravel Road Farm News, July 30 2022
As August begins in two days, we are reminded that this is the busiest time of year for us. So much food, so much marketing and so much to eat. This week, we have enjoyed rice and beans with corn on the cob, tacos, broccoli au gratin, zucchini onion pie, and stuffed napa cabbage rolls and green beans. Green beans are new in the boxes this week! We like to cook up a batch in a giant saute pan with butter, onions, garlic, green beans, salt and pepper. So good when they are freshly picked. This is the first planting of green beans, but we will have two more after this. Green beans are an excellent source of protein, fiber, and vitamins and minerals. Delicious!
This week, there will again be some blueberries for the boxes from our friends in Iola, John and Mary. There are limited amounts, as the berries have such a short season when it is hot and dry like this. This is the second and last week. Carrots are new for some boxes this week. We put all the different sizes together in the bunches, because that is how they grow in the rows. The tomatoes are starting to ripen. There will be so many more to come, but we hope you enjoy some of the first of the season. Bulk tomatoes start in about 2 or 3 weeks. If you enjoy fresh cabbage, be sure to try the Tendersweet variety. It is our absolute favorite - perfect for coleslaw.
The weather has been favorable for farm work. We are enjoying the cooler nights so much! A good night's sleep makes working easier. There is still time to come out to the farm for a quick farm tour but time is running out. All CSA customers get a free farm tour in the summer, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are our best days. Please call or text Brigid to make a time to see the vegetables in person. 715-281-0812
