Week 8! That means you've accomplished nearly 2 whole months of eating local food! Yay! Congrats! And it only gets better from here. All (heirlooms, red slicers, and cherries) the tomatoes are starting to kick into gear this week, so expect some this week, and many more to come! Some of our specialty peppers are filling in the gap while we wait for more of the bells to size and ripen - we have jalapenos this week for you spicy eaters and sweet bananas which are great for stuffing and grilling. Eggplant are making their debut this week too! Somewhat limited, but expect more to come!
Now a little about the farm: it was brutally hot this week, like worryingly, terribly hot. Hotter than I have ever seen it for longer in Maine after nearly 15 summers of working outside. This kind of heat puts a lot of stress on the team, we have to move more slowly, take lots of breaks, and hydrate like crazy all day long. The team did an amazing job of getting it done in one of the hardest weeks I've seen in a while, they really are the best. Next week isn't looking much better, but I have hope that we'll see some more rain, temps in the 70s and a steady breeze soon.
In that same vein, we've decided to take pass on Open Farm Day this year, and instead plan a day of tours and activities for CSA members in August. It is going to be 90 degrees all weekend, we are in the July crazies(so working a lot of the weekend), we've barely had a weekend off since May, and I'm just going to call it and say no, thank you. As we work on a more tailored event (with better weather), expect to heat more from us via email.
THAT SAID - OUR U-PICK IS STILL OPEN, AND POPPING OFF! THE FLOWER ARE OFF THE HOOK! WE'LL BE OPENING THE U-PICK AT 8 INSTEAD OF NINE SO EARLY BIRDS CAN BEAT THE HEAT!
The colors are amazing, the sunflowers are the sunniest I've ever seen and everything benefits from being cut, so come by and make the best bouquet you can imagine!
From someone who visited last weekend, "Just wanted to drop you a note and say that u-pick flowers and raspberries was amazing! So many beautiful flowers and the berries are delicious. We have been enjoying our weekly share this summer, and loved coming to the farm for upick!" So don't miss out, come on by!
The Sunflowers and snapdragons are blooming in the U-Pick! Stop by this weekend, to grab a bouquet (or two, or three!) along with some other lovely flowers! Make sure to bring a vase or jar to carry your bouquet home in. Water and clippers are provided.
