Farm Happenings for Week of June 30, 2020

Posted on June 23rd, 2020 by Harvie Admin

Greetings once again. We are having so much fun putting together your shares week after week. We hope you are enjoying them. Thank you to everyone who has given us helpful feedback along the way. We do really appreciate hearing from you when you have something to share.

Lots of new summer items on the list this week including some cherries (both sweet and sour), cucumbers, cauliflower (purple!), beets, cabbage, and more. Of course, not all items will go in to all shares. So keep updating your product preferences to make sure you get the items you want most in future weeks.

If you know someone that is considering joining Harvie Farms, we are still accepting new members for the moment. But it's safe to say we will soon have to go back to a waiting list. So have them sign up soon.

4TH OF JULY SALE If you are getting a butcher box this week (or want to purchase one through our farm stand option), please know that we have reduced the price on both the 1/3# burger patties as well as the chipped ribeye steak. It's a good week to stock up on those items. Enjoy your upcoming 4th of July holiday!

DEADLINE FOR CUSTOMIZATION Please remember that the cutoff to customize your butcher box is 7am Fridays. The deadline for the farm box is noon Fridays.

CHEESE SHARE INFO "Uncle Joe's" is a dense white-wine-washed cheese from Clover Creek Cheese Cellar of Williamsburg, Pennsylvania.  This batch has a particularly delightful "cheesey" aroma - it smells sweet, salty and tangy - and it's paste is equally delectable.

BOX RETURNS Thanks for everyone who has been sending back the boxes, insulated liners, and ice packs. We really appreciate it--especially if you can neatly break down the box and set the other items in top of it. This helps our couriers a lot! If for some reason you have set out your packaging to be picked up and it has been left behind, please let us know. We will be sure to make note for future weeks.

Have fun customizing your box. We look forward to packing it up for you next week!

Take care out there,
Neil, on behalf of the Harvie Farms Pittsburgh crew

ps--This week's picture is showing a team of 8 Belgium work horses from Clarion River Organics, the Amish farm community where we source a lot of your produce. Here they are plowing a field to prepare for a planting of onions. Marty and Rachel planted 70,000 Sweet Red, White, Yellow, and Candy onions. This particular farm, Hidden Valley Farm, utilizes 9 acres of vegetable production including, green kale, cucumbers, green tomatoes and slicing tomatoes and different varieties of peppers and winter squash. Marty also does horse bridle work and raises lambs on their diversified farm that sits in the hills of Parker, PA.
