Eating Green (literally and figuratively)

Posted on March 9th, 2022 by Harvie Admin

Green is both one of our favorite colors and one of our favorite lifestyles.

Among our 450+ products, we have so many green foods - from Fifth Season Greens to Fat Cat Chocolates' Matcha Crisp Bar.

Our foods are also really green. Last week, we had 154 Organic options, 20 pasture-raised options, and 25 grass-fed options. We are proud to carry and emphasize sustainable certifications in our sourcing, including things like IPM, Certified Sustainable Seafood by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Fair-Trade, Chemical Free, and Biodynamic.

This week, try out some green foods or some of our St. Patrick’s day specials!

Featured & New This Week

Irish porridge bread, Mediterra — this seasonal item has all the flavors you’d expect from a traditional Irish Soda Bread but carries a kick of molasses that will take you back to childhood days of eating steeping hot, hearty bowls of Irish Oatmeal.

Brisket, Jubilee Hilltop Ranch — set aside your day to make some corned beef with this delicious brisket cut.

New Producer, Jacobsen Salt Company — Founded in 2011, Jacobsen Salt Co. is the first company to harvest salt in the Pacific Northwest since the 1800s. Since then it has transformed from a local, small business to a nationally recognized brand as America’s leading salt maker. Harvested from the cold, pristine waters of Netarts Bay on the Oregon Coast, our flake and kosher sea salts have garnered worldwide favor for their beautiful presentation and pure taste by professional chefs and home cooks alike.

Our top Green picks:

Organic tunnel-grown spinach from Adam at Wayward Seed Farm - this spinach has been slowly growing all winter meaning the flavor is incredibly sweet! The farm has to work hard to keep the spinach alive during cold snaps, but the cold and extra care is what gives it an incredible flavor.

Broccoli
Leeks
Salsa verde, Ocho Salsa
Spinach fettuccine, Ohio City Pasta
Pesto, The Pickled Chef
Fresh witches brew - Pittsburgh Juice Company
Equal Exchange Green Tea
Matcha crisp, Fat Cat Chocolates

Recipes of the week

Green smoothie — Milk or Oat Milk, spinach, frozen banana, apple, avocado

Mushroom Risotto, from Mackenzie, Harvie Box product manager — recipe here. The trick to a good risotto? ‘Keep it thirsty’ — slowly add broth just when the rice starts to dry out.

Barbeque seitan melts — Mediterra bun, Blackbird bbq seitan, St. Malachi cheese or Gran Oppagio cheese, cabbage, and a side of collard greens (try sauteing cabbage with some oil, red wine vinegar, a pinch of sugar, and seasoning)

Producer Profile

Teddi Maslowski of Birch Creek Farmery

Tail to snout. For almost 100 years, that’s been the motto of Birch Creek Farmery, a Burgettstown farm raising premium, heritage meats. Nothing goes to waste — not a gallon of milk, not a minute of time.

Four generations back, Birch Creek Farmery started as a dairy farm. Throughout the years, the family-owned farm had a variety of animals, but today’s story starts when the now 28-year-old Teddi Maslowski, a fourth-generationer who owns the farm, decided to move back.

I loved agriculture… and digging deeper into commercial agriculture and environmental pressure and animal ethics, it all came together to me wanting to raise meat, even if it was just for the family”....
