Farm Happenings for Week of August 18, 2020

Posted on August 11th, 2020 by Harvie Admin

Behind the scenes but vitally important to Harvie Farms Pittsburgh is our fantastic packing crew. Pictured is Derek Dumont, our Assistant Manager and talented point person for all things logistics oriented. We are fortunate to have a smart, passionate, and fun group of employees that care about sustainable food & farming and also have a high attention to detail. Packing customized boxes takes a lot of concentration--and during the pandemic it also takes a extra degree of safety precaution. Our crew really works hard to pack your boxes with care. Can you feel it?

WHAT'S COMING UP Among these weeks of summer harvests, we are actually already planning what Harvie Farms will look like during the fall and winter. While we don't have any official announcements just yet, please stay tuned as we get ready to share our plans. We hope you are excited about continuing to source high quality, local foods from Harvie Farms all 4 seasons of the year.

NO MORE SHEEP YOGURT Sadly, we can no longer source the River View Dairy sheep milk yogurt. The farmers had to take a break from production to focus on the produce aspect of their farm. We hope it will be back during the cooler months. Stay tuned.

NEW ITEM: HONEY PUFFED SPELT This organic product is a fun one for kids and grown ups alike. Sweet and crunchy kind of like cereal, but made with only spelt, honey, and coconut oil (it does contain gluten, fyi). Look for it as a swap option when you customize your box....also a quick note that mushrooms are back this week after taking a week off last week.

CHEESE SHARE: ROYER MOUNTAIN When Clover Creek Cheese Cellar contemplated the proper name for a cooked and pressed alpine-style cheese, mountains and travel first came to their thoughts. To get anywhere from the farm they cross at least one mountain. One they traverse often is Royer Mountain, and they chose that as the name for this cellar-aged cheese. Their mountains are nothing like the Alps, neither is the cheese like any other. Closely watching the temperature and turning the cheese weekly brought a flavor that is full of zest and mountain breezes blowing through the fresh green pastures. The aging process gives this cheese an Italian twist with a Romano flavor, so perhaps it is the Italian Alps? Clover Creek loves the sharp and yet smooth texture of this cheese.

Enjoy your box full of bounty, and please stay safe out there.
