Farm Happenings for Week of October 6, 2020

Posted on September 30th, 2020 by Harvie Admin

Last Friday our Harvie Farms team had the opportunity to take a tour of Who Cooks For You Farm in Armstrong County. It was awesome. While we kept our distance and skipped the pot luck meal due to the pandemic, we still had a great time seeing the fields where so much of our Harvie Farms food comes from each week. Chris, Aeros (pictured), and their two boys work tirelessly to provide a diverse mix of organic produce. And now we are already making plans for what they will grow for next year. Very exciting to imagine what is to come (Oh, and see that huge greenhouse in the background? That is now getting filled with all kinds of green leafy items for our winter boxes--yum!).

DONATE-A-BOX PROGRAM We are starting a new initiative this week. We are offering a "Donate-A-Box" program to farm box members where you can opt to add on a $15 donation, which Harvie Farms will match with funds of our own. With these funds we will pack farm boxes for Pittsburgh neighbors in need. 412 Food Rescue will coordinate the delivery of these new weekly farm boxes. We are thrilled to start this program, and we hope you will help support it. To participate, simply go to the "Extras" section when customizing your box. You will see the "Donate-A-Box" option, which you can select to add to your order. Weekly supplies are limited. If we sell out, we will offer more in following weeks. Thanks in advance!

GROUND BEEF BOXES For butcher box customers interested in stocking up on ground beef for the winter, we now offer a 10 lb box at a discounted price. Again, simply select it during your customization process. We will work to make this option available for farm box customers in the future as well.

TURKEYS One way or the other, Thanksgiving and holidays will arrive faster than we can believe. So we are working hard to figure out a plan to provide pastured turkeys from Clarion River Organics via Harvie Farms. Stay tuned.

CHEESE OF THE WEEK: THE HOMESTEADER CHEESE FROM PASTURE MAID CREAMERY Farmers-style cheeses are simple in method, making them very creamy and versatile. "The Homesteader" is a mildly sweet and tangy cheese crafted on the farm of Adam Dean in New Castle, PA. A great mild cheese that kids are bound to enjoy.

Be well, continue to stay safe, and feel free to reach out to us any time.
