Farm Happenings for week of December 21, 2020

Posted on December 16th, 2020 by Harvie Admin

Featured Holiday Products New products keep rolling in. And while we are working to provide all the local produce we can find this time of year, we are also excited about these other items to round out your holiday box.

  • NorAnna Rio Vista Citrus Rio Red Grapefruit, Mars Oranges, Meyer Lemons (Organic). We found Norm and Anna's Texas farm through a mutual Harvie connection. And while sourcing produce from outside of our region is not our norm, we feel like a direct purchasing line to an organic family farm that grows products we cannot get closer to home is an indulgence we can embrace this time of year. We hope you enjoy the fruit. Norm and Anna assure me that you will be amazed by their tree-ripened citrus.
  • Chez Lapin Locally made, Eco-conscious, cruelty-free, women-owned, small batch, US grown soy candles, Phthalate-free, infused with essential oils, biodegradable. Beeswax Lip Balm, all natural ingredients, BPA free tubes.
  • Natrona Bottling Seltzer, Tonic, Mint Ginger Ale, and Ginger Beer (12 oz. 4-pack bottles).

Chicken for Butcher Box At long last, we are thrilled to let our butcher box customers know that you can now purchase chicken in your share. The whole and 8-piece cut up chicken comes from a group of family farmers in eastern Pennsylvania that package their poultry through Locust Point Chicken. Farm box members can also add chicken to their order by selecting it in the "Extras" section during customization.

Update Preferences With all of these new products on the list, it is a great time to update your product preferences. This will help us fill your box with just items you want and not the items you prefer to avoid. If you have an add-on share of bread, for example, it is also helpful to set your bread preference to "Not For Me" so that you don't end up with a duplicate item from your add-on share as well as your customized box. https://www.harvie.farm/member/preferences

Refer-A-Friend We have been reflecting on the year, and one of the observations that stands out is just how powerful it is when you, our current members, help refer us to new customers. We love it when your friends, family, and neighbors join Harvie Farms. It really makes this feel like a virtual food community.

In case you don't know, we offer both you and your newly referred friend a $25 Harvie Farms credit when they sign up via this link: https://www.harvie.farm/member/refer-a-friend. We encourage you to spread the word. We aren't able to add new members all the time, but this is one time of the year where we do have open memberships. Consider an email or Facebook post to help us spread the word--and earn credit toward more local foods in the process.

Google Reviews And if you are enjoying Harvie Farms Pittsburgh, we would sincerely appreciate it if you take a moment to create a Google Review about your experience (pro tip: if you are already logged in to Google, you may need to open the link via an Incognito window).

Harvie Members Facebook Group Did you know that there are farms using the Harvie software all across the country? If you want to connect with thousands of other folks eating locally and seasonally, you can do so by joining the "Harvie Members" page on Facebook. All kinds of pictures and recipes and shared experiences await you. Just be sure to let folks know you are using Harvie Farms Pittsburgh!

Coffee Share 412 Food Rescue Hero Coffee from La Prima Espresso. Light~Medium Roast w/ notes of Pineapple, Dried Fig, Pumpernickel. Whole bean coffee. Now you can sip your morning java while supporting a great cause! Enjoy this tasty 412 Food Rescue Hero coffee blend. $1 from each bag will be donated to support their mission of ending hunger and food waste!

Bread Share The flagship bread of Mediterra Bakehouse, the Mt. Athos Fire Bread is made using a germ-restored wheat sourdough, which gives the bread its dark color.  This chewy, dense bread is great as a table loaf accompanied by olive oil or cheese, but it’s distinct crust also makes it an excellent choice for breakfast toast, or sliced and used for sandwiches.

As I write this, the snow is falling and plow truck just drove by. Feels festive! We hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

Stay safe and eat well,

Neil Stauffer, on behalf of the Harvie Farms crew

ps--Our delivery schedule will remain the same throughout the holidays.
