The last couple of weeks have seen a lot of growth. We have tomatoes, tomatillos, corn, squash, melons, and cucumbers in the ground and growing. Our lettuce has made a come back and the chard is getting bigger. The kale however....takes off!
We are using kale seeds from our own seed bank and I am very excited with the results! A deep green and purple kale that is tender and wavy is the dominant type. Mixed in we have cabbage looking leaves and lighter green varieties. Our kale plants from last year are almost done flowering and we will be collecting those seeds soon! The focus for this project is to identify certain plants that do well on our property and harvest their seeds to create a self-sufficient kale takeover! Just kidding....This seed saving will help to preserve and diversify genetics and create a more sustainable permaculture for our farm.
We are also collecting and using seed from celery, chard, carrots, leeks, and garlic this year and have been using drought-tolerant potatoes for several years.
