Farm Happenings for May 12, 2020

Posted on May 8th, 2020 by Lisa Duff

Happy Spring?  It's a confusing season for weather. But we live in the Chesapeake region! WE spent a lot of the morning covering the strawberries as most all plants have immature berries and all plants have flowers that don't like to freeze!  We have tomatoes in the field that are covered but they sure won't like freezing temps tonight-covered or not.  We're reminded it's a bit like Vegas around here in the spring when I put crops in earlier than the 'recommended' dates and we hedge our bets. The strawberries aren't a bet though.  They flowered early due to such a warm March and we usually have berries setting fruit in May. It's May after all!!! So we're crossing our fingers because it looks like a promising berry crop this year!

Alex is washing carrots in the picture above. You will see the last of the tunnel carrots again this week -- that's it for a while. The field carrots are an inch high. Hope you enjoyed them! Same with turnips, you'll see them again this week but not for the rest of the month. Eat the greens! More lettuce and more spinach. It's spinach season. Freeze it if it's too much.

Check out and support a Freeland local, Saucier Willie, maker of fine sauces and rubs! This week we are featuring his BBQ rub. He sources many of his ingredients from local farmers, like us! It's good stuff. He's good people!

We are sold out of our cheese and butter shares for this year. IF you got a share, you're set. Daily Crisis Farm, as many local farms, have had an overwhelming demand for their products. WE are fortunate they will supply us with our CSA numbers for the remainder of the year.

The bread share this week is the multi-seed loaf. I love this bread toasted with avocado and coarse sea salt with an optional fried runny egg YUMMY. The extra loaves for sale this week are jalapeño gruyere, butterscotch macadamia and rustic rye.

WE will have more Radebaugh flowers on Tuesday at the farm. Gorgeous hanging baskets that will last all season. We also will be selling our plants at the farm store every Tuesday throughout the month. Lot's of tomatoes and they don't really want to be in the ground yet!

On a sad note we had to put our beloved Pixie girl down yesterday. Our hearts are broken. She was the best farm dog ever. Love that girl SO much. Rest in Peace pixie lix. You will be missed by all. xoxo

Have a great week everybody.

Be Well,

Lisa
