Enjoying the cooler weather? Everybody seems happier after a break from the heat.
Harvesting and transplanting during those extreme temperatures was brutal on the crew and the plants.
We had 4 carrot bed failures due to the heat and several lettuce, arugula and spicy mix failures due to the heat and humidity. It happens this time of year for sure but we are eternal optimists, being farmers and all, lol. We've transplanted lettuce this week, fingers crossed we'll have lettuce back in you bags soon!
Luckily there's a second planting of tomatoes coming in as the first field crop is on its way out due to blight. Blight happens; sometimes early, sometimes late but pretty much always. You'll see field tomatoes again soon. The sweet peppers are coloring nicely and the shishitos along with the hot peppers are going strong.
I do love this time of year...the bounty of summer's harvest.
We have carrots from Siwik family farms and our late summer yellow squash crop has come in.
We're happy to offer you a nice mix up of products this week!
Love our hot peppers but can't keep up with the abundance? Consider pickling or dehydrating some hot peppers for future use. A fantastic method to preserve any kind of pepper is to roast them over an open fire (or smoke them) then preserve with a little salt, vinegar and oil. Peppers lack natural acids so they can be preserved in a water bath canner when using vinegar and/or salt.
Keep an eye out for more explicit instructions for preserving peppers in our next blog. In the mean time keep them cool and dry in the veggie crisper of your fridge. Plastic bags preserve them well as long as they don't accumulate too much moisture. Paper bags work nicely too.
This week's blog talks about family dinner and I think it's a very interesting read. Check it out here and let me know what you think.
Have a great week and stop by to say Hi at the Hereford Farmer's Market Saturday 9-12noon!
