Rivendale Farms CSA Newsletter, Week 19 (Oct 16)

Posted on October 11th, 2018 by Neil Stauffer

Hello there, members. Welcome back for another week. We are watching the temperatures dip today--possibly heading toward our first frost of the year in the next week.

We are already saying goodbye to many of our summer favorites. Though our field tomato season was terribly short and disappointing, our greenhouse cherry tomatoes did great (we have to pull them out this coming week to make way for our winter greens). Change is constant in the veggie fields, and at no time is that more true than when it comes to first frost.

We are also saying hello to other seasonal rituals that take place during this time of year. For example, we planted about 3/4 acre of hard red winter wheat yesterday. This only happens once a year (we have to remind ourselves how to do it each time). But the result next summer is the wheat that make our Rivendale sourdough loaves that go into the CSA. So it's a very exciting yearly event to get more wheat in the ground.

On a side note, as I write we are also preparing for a produce team harvest party here at the farm. It just so happens that one of our field crew (Nathan) is a chef too, so we are thrilled to have this chance to eat as a group from the farm. Our crew has done a great job this year--allowing us to almost double the size of the CSA membership from last year. We are so thankful to them as well as our CSA members for the mutual commitment. We hope you enjoy eating from the farm!

On behalf of the crew,

Neil
