Summer Lettuce

Posted on July 10th, 2020 by Pedro Aponte

One of our goals for this year was to be able to grow lettuces through the entire season. With some heat-tolerant varieties, constant irrigation, and the use of shade clothes to filter out some sunlight and heat, we have been moderately successful. Yet, the persistent hot weather over the past few weeks is really hitting hard our lettuces and some other cooler-weather crops. We do anticipate to have our salad mix back in about three weeks (as we just added a new shade cloth that filters about 50% of the sunlight and, according to the manufacturer, we should be able to lower the temperature by 15 degrees under the shade). Meanwhile, our heirloom tomatoes and peppers are finally starting to ripen and you should start seeing them in your CSA boxes pretty soon. Praying for some rain, blessings from the homestead.
