Farm Happenings for June 20, 2022

Posted on June 17th, 2022 by Pedro Aponte

A heat wave hit us this week and most of the remaining spring crops took a toll. Lettuces, in particular, seem to have suffered the most. They bolted and turned a bit bitter. But, as they say in permaculture, the problem is the solution. Instead of sending the lettuce to the compost pile, we fed it to the chickens and pigs. And they absolutely enjoyed their salad! If you love salad greens, fear not. We have some other greens and summer lettuces growing under shade and on the “summer greens protocol” which involves a shade cloth and cold showers every two-three hours. That ensures that we can continue to bring some of those greens to you. As a matter of fact, some of you might even see arugula this week! I hope all of you are staying comfortable (as I write this is 96 degrees outside).

Two little favors to ask: 1) If you are on social media (Instagram/Facebook), please consider following us. We are trying to get more CSA members to share comments, ideas and recipes. 2) Please take good care of the CSA boxes and return them to us for reuse. This year’s boxes are not as sturdy as last year’s and we would like to stretch them through the season. Take care, everyone, and blessings from the homestead.
