Farm Happenings for January 7, 2023

Posted on January 1st, 2023 by Jack Manix

Welcome to the New Year! Let's hope 2023 brings peace and joy around the world. A normal growing season would be nice, too! Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8 will be the final pickups of the Fall/Winter CSA. We'll be offering some bulk specials on the Extras list if you'd like to stock up including carrots, butternut squash and sweet potatoes. Our coolers, storage areas and greenhouses are pretty well emptying out. What we have left will be marketed through Food Connects or donated.

As one season ends, another begins. We're busy ordering flower and vegetable seeds and preparing our propagating greenhouse to start early tomatoes, onions, long-term flowers and herbs. We grow around 5000 grafted tomato plants for our needs and for other commercial growers to plant in their greenhouses. We used to have more of a gap between the growing seasons but now we're growing something 12 months of the year. There's a lot of planning and hard work but we're lucky to have a great team that comes back year after year and makes everything work out!

Thank you for supporting our farm and crew. Our employees all live locally and are invested in their communities. We hope you enjoyed the CSA and will consider joining again next year. In February, we'll have details on the summer Lunchbox CSA and Farmstand CSA which you'll also be able to read about on our website www.walkerfarm.com . Please return your CSA boxes by dropping them off at the greenhouse or farmstand when you get the chance but please drive slowly as our chickens will be roaming around the farm. Our shiny, black rooster, George, might have a few choice words for you as you pass but pay him no mind. It's probably only chicken talk for "Happy New Year!"
