What an amazing week we had! The cool weather was just what the doctor ordered to get us through the first week of August which is often the hottest week of the year! I know it's going to get hot again (it already has) but we got a taste of fall and that's all we need to suffer through a few more weeks of summer!
Many of the fall crops are seeded or transplanted but we'll continue to plant out in the fields for another month or so. If you're thinking of putting in a fall garden, now is the time to plant spinach, lettuce, radish, or turnips. The first of our fall spinach is sprouting...hurrah! We also have a good stand of watermelon radishes, diakon, purple diakon and black Spanish radish. We've even started seeding for winter in the high tunnels.
In the heat of summer, the greens have been in decline, but we're expecting a surge in lettuce, kale, chard, bok choy, asian greens, collards and more as the days continue to shorten.
Several of you have been asking about when we'll be doing signups for the winter CSA. Thanks so much for your interest and we do really need to get things set up for that. One way you can help is to help us find parking lots where we could do CSA pickup. Due to Covid-19, we don't expect an opportunity for an indoor winter market to double as a CSA pickup location, so we'll need to find alternate locations and times. And honestly, we're thinking we'd like to see if we can get Saturdays off for once.
So, do you know of a church or business with a big enough parking lot for us to do winter CSA pickups on weekday evenings or afternoons? The lot would need to be either unoccupied or large enough that our van and your cars wouldn't inhibit the operation of the owner. We'd like to find locations in Lee's Summit, and Overland Park area and maybe Brookside. If you have suggestions, please pass them along. Do you know the owner of a health food store? Doing a CSA pickup there could be beneficial to their business.
Once we get solid pickup locations, I hope to send out a survey about times and locations to see what seems to work out best with those of you who want to continue the CSA through the winter. FYI final CSA pickups are October 22, 23, 24th. We're super excited for our best winter CSA season ever utilizing our newest high tunnel and hopefully building a new one this fall to add even more variety and flexibility to the winter CSA.
Thank you so much for making the effort to be part of the CSA. We appreciate your decision to support your local farmers! We can't tell you enough how much you mean to us!
Gratefully yours,
Dave and Sheri
