Was that hot enough for you? Last week's heat was incredibly grueling, but we survived. Things were touch and go whether or not we could fill all the shares because the crops were struggling as much as the farmers to get the job done. We also realized how much we relied upon our college student workers when they left us to hit the books.
This week, we're cutting back our projected harvests on several crops because they took a pretty hard hit in the heat and we're not sure how they'll recover this week. You probably noticed how pathetically tiny the lettuce heads were last week. They just won't grow to much of a size in those high temps.
About the only things we're swimming in are the peppers, carrots, radishes and beets. We have some potatoes from our friend Mike Pearl of Pearl Family Farm this week to help make up for the reduced production of other crops that are recovering from heat dormancy. We took the week off from planting last week, but this morning we've picked up the planting schedule right where we left off so we'll keep a continuous supply of veggies to you through the end of October (October 19th is the final CSA week).
Late August always seems a little tight on farm production because of the heat waves taking their toll, but as we get into mid September and October the variety and quantity reaches the maximum for the entire season. We'll keep having summer crops but soon we'll be able to produce copious amounts of greens and cool season crops as well for a multitude of seasonal options.
