Week 7 CSA

Posted on June 15th, 2024 by Dave Redfearn

A note about July 4th

We'll be taking July 4th off for the farm so we are moving all Thursday deliveries the week of July 4th to July 3rd.  This is only for the week of July 4th and will only affect people who normally get Thursday deliveries.  Friday and Saturday deliveries will remain the same.  We still have a few weeks before we get there, but wanted to let you know that now since you probably also might not want to pick up your veggies on the 4th of July either.

Preparing for a dearth of help

We've been trying to accomplish a lot of stuff done now because our kids have some big summer commitments just around the corner.  Our oldest, Josiah, will be heading out on a 10 day church mission trip to Croatia in a few days and while he's gone, our next two oldest will be gone at church camp.  The normal workload will fall to all of us remaining, so we're trying to get ahead on what we can, trellising, weeding, weedeating.  Hopefully we survive the next week and a half!

Fresh Garlic and More Fresh Onions

This is the best garlic crop we've ever had!  Last year, the winter weather was bad and killed half of our overwintered onions and garlic, but this year is a different story.  We'll have beautiful fresh garlic available for the next couple weeks while we harvest and cure the bulk of it so we can store it and have it available for months to come.  This summer it's looking like there will be no shortage of beautiful onions and garlic so don't be shy about loading up on these!  We can't wait to start harvesting some of the largest onions (we've been harvesting from an earlier planted group that didn't grow quite as well, but we'll soon be harvesting from a different variety that grew much larger).

Better Get your Napa Cabbage Heads while you can

Napa cabbages need to be harvested soon and they don't store in the cooler for months on end like normal round head cabbages, so as it gets hot we're gong to need to harvest these heads.  You won't see them again on the CSA availability until the fall.  We'll transplant a second round of these cool-season crops in late July for late September harvest.

Thanks so much for taking the unusual step of feeding your family local food.  We appreciate your efforts and we are very glad to have the opportunity to grow for you.
