Farm Happenings for June 30, 2020 and July 4th

Posted on June 27th, 2020 by John Zilnicki

July 4th is upon us already!  The 4th has always been one on my favorite holidays!  Long days, warm, beautiful weather, fireworks, Bbq's, and all the delicious summer veggies right around the corner!  Times are still weird but we can all still make the best of any situation and continue to see the good and have gratitude for our blessings.  We are experiencing real drought conditions, as I'm sure your lawns and gardens are starting to show some browning.  A lot of our equipment is old (99% of it) and tough times like these pushes them to their limit and we have had a lot of breakdowns, issues, problems.  I like to say it exposes some of our real weaknesses.  So, we fix, modify, and keep plugging along, that is the true name of the game this time of year.

Farm Happenings:

-Deer have eaten most of my pepper plants! (very sad, and a first!)

-Tomatoes are shaping up real nice and starting to produce fruit.

-Our greenhouse cucumber trials and starting to produce beautiful Cukes!

-Half our farm picked up a few tenths of rain as I'm writing this! (Thank you mother nature!)

-Cut Flowers are just starting so if you want to get your hands on a bouquet we have them as an add-on for farmstand pick up only this week.

-Honey and candles in the add-ons!

This week we have 2 new add-ons!  One is Honey from the Custer Bee Club which is welcome for anyone to join to learn more about bees, beekeeping, honey, etc.  The other  Add-on is awesome Red White and Blue candles made by our very own CSA member couple!  The honey is as local as it gets and these Candles are a side hustle for an awesome couple during these weird times, and perfect for the 4th of July!  If anyone has a product that might be of interest to other members please reach out and we can set it up to offer it to all our members.  Like I've said before, you joined our Farming Family and we will support you in any way possible.  This is what strong communities are built on!

Enjoy your week, stay grateful towards the good and the bad, and keep supporting your local businesses.
