Farm Happenings for October 1, 2019

Posted on September 29th, 2019 by John Zilnicki

Hello members!  How is it October already!  The days are flying by this time of year as the sun sets earlier and earlier.  A few farm updates:  Cover crops are getting worked into the ground.  This means we are planting rye, wheat, peas, and radish for the fall/winter months.  These cover crops hold many benefits.  They help build organic matter in our soils for future production.  They help stop erosion during the winter months.  The peas catch nitrogen in the air and replace it back into our soils as the seasons crops have used up the available nitrogen.  The list of benefits can keep going but that is enough for you today.  Stop on down to the farmstand and pick up some gorgeous potted mums and other fall decorations.  Enjoy your week and keep enjoying them veggies!
