Arugula this week! Goes well with Orange Marmalade goat cheese, carrots, and toasted walnuts. >>> We escaped a frost at our annual 1st frost date (October 15th-20th) so that means we still have peppers and beautiful blooming flowers. Tiny white buckwheat flowers are blooming in stripes in our fall carrot field. We've planted a lush cover crop cocktail of buckwheat, sunflowers, and rye down the pathways between our carrot beds to hold the soil in place, build organic matter, feed beneficial microorganisms including symbiotic bacteria and fungus, and to capture nutrients for later crops. Beautiful and useful while we conveniently grow delicious carrots too! The buckwheat flowers are a special bonus for the insects, and we have to be careful to mow them soon because too much of a good thing is no good. Too many buckwheat seeds could become a problem sprouting up in next year's arugula or radishes.

We’re growing for you!
Farmers Marie Williamson and William Lyons started Bluebird Farm in 2009 on the land that Marie grew up on in Morganton, North Carolina. They earn their livelihood growing food on the farm, and love the beauty of food and land. They are passionate about the art of grazing livestock, and they feed their meat hogs certified organic grains. They work hard to raise healthy, flavorful vegetables, pastured meats, and eggs using biological techniques that improve the health of their land and contribute to a diverse farm ecosystem.
