With the door closed on the Winter CSA we’ve turned our attention to more spring planting! This week alone we’ve got more than 5,500 eager transplants coming in to kickstart our spring crops. However, before anything else goes in the ground we’ve got to prep the hoops and beds where the plants will take root. The first step was recovering four hoops with plastic that had been taken down for the snow earlier this year. This job is no easy feat requiring at least four people to pull over 120 feet of plastic up and across the length of a tunnel! We cherish these covered spaces though as they help us to control the amount of water the plants receive (which is vital in a wet spring) and reduce the spread of disease. Beneath the plastic we will now continue to map, clear out, weed, fork, fertilize, compost, lay out, and plant the many beds we will need to grow for a bountiful Spring CSA season.

We’re growing for you!
Farmers Marie Williamson and William Lyons started Bluebird Farm in 2009 on the land that Marie grew up on in Morganton, North Carolina. They earn their livelihood growing food on the farm, and love the beauty of food and land. They are passionate about the art of grazing livestock, and they feed their meat hogs certified organic grains. They work hard to raise healthy, flavorful vegetables, pastured meats, and eggs using biological techniques that improve the health of their land and contribute to a diverse farm ecosystem.
