Well Mother Nature does it to us again. We hit -23C last Wednesday morning. That is far far colder than what we normally get. It likely ends the kalettes, kale, and leeks we still have in the field. Usually we hold these crops well into December. They are completely frozen as of writing. I won’t write them off completely until I see what they look like once they thaw when it warms up this week. I’m not overly optimistic, these crops are extremely tough, but honestly I don’t think they are that tough.
in the pic is cabbage under the snow. We have a fair bit of cabbage harvested and in storage for your boxes but I am curious to see if it comes through in the field as it has that thick blanket of snow on it protecting them. Good snow cover makes a huge difference on overwintering crops like strawberries and garlic. We’ll see how the cabbage does. Even with the cold temps the ground is not frozen where it is covered with snow.
- last of the green onions, Brussels sprouts and Roma tomatoes this week.
- looks like milder temperatures this week so your deliveries will be safe left out when we drop off. If you are worried leave out a cooler and we will but your farm share in it.
- please leave out/return all boxes and red bags. We need them back. We also take decent 1 doz. egg cartons.
There are some positives with the cold weather this past week. There have been some absolutely stunning sun rises and sun sets and I will admit I do enjoy the odd cold, crisp, calm, sunny early morning....just not too many of them.
Talk again soon
