Farm Happenings for August 25, 2021

D&V Organics CSA

Week 16

This time of year (the beginning of hurricane season) usually represents a slightly stressful period for us on the farm.  It's a time of year where we have several rain sensitive crops on the farm that we are enjoying tremendously, but get severely impacted by rain.  This week will possibly be the last for our watermelon crop, which has been very consistent over the past month and a half.  We are hoping to continue picking tomatoes well into September, but this weekend's weather is sure to put a damper on how fast we can manage the harvest.  For maximum flavor, we like to allow our tomatoes to ripen on the plant, but as ripe tomatoes sit on the plant and are rained on, they begin to deteriorate quickly.  The plants, with long periods of moisture on the leaves, begin to defoliate rapidly this time of year.  Our Fall crops are coming along in the field and we are anticipating greens in the next 3-4 weeks, which marks an exciting time of year.  The next few weeks will be busy for us as we clean up old fields, plant a seemingly endless supply of Fall vegetables and continue to manage the current harvest.

Enjoy,

Derek & Vicky
