Week 28
We have two more weeks left until our 2021 CSA season is over. After a long period of waiting, our broccolini is finally going to make it into the CSA this week! Over the past week, with temperatures in the 60s, it sprang up just enough to be ready for this week's boxes. This week we will be busy with protecting our remaining greens in the field with a special fabric that reduces the ability of settling frost from damaging the leaves. The fabric, which we call row cover, provides some insulation for the crops growing underneath and when supported with hoops, the fabric eliminates the damaging effect of frost on some of our more tender greens like lettuce and baby bok choi. Applying the row cover is a lot of work, and most likely nobody's favorite job, it's tedious and hard to manage during windy days, and requires significant shoveling of soil on the edges to prevent it from blowing away in the wind. The row cover is a necessary step in continuing to produce greens this late in the season.
