D&V Organics CSA
Week 13
This week we were out getting Fall things planted into the field. It's nice to be on the horizon of cooler weather and only weeks away from having green vegetables from the farm back into our diet. Most years we plant some baby salad greens in the Fall or Spring, but we tend to shy away from the baby greens production due to the complex nature of producing a triple washed and dried, ready-to-eat, salad green. California baby greens production has really spoiled us, giving the consumer easy access to a super clean, ready to plate and eat product. In reality, on a smaller scale, such as ours, it is a costly and time consuming endeavor to produce the same type of product, and every time I grow baby salad greens, I tell myself that it isn't entirely worth it. Maybe it's out of desperation for something fast growing and green, but baby arugula and mizuna (a mild flavored easy to grow japanese salad green) have been planted, and we are expecting them to be ready in a few weeks. This week we'll work on planting lettuces, cauliflower, broccoli, broccolini, and parsley in the field. It's been noted before, but Fall feels like a bit of a renewal on the farm, with a lot of anticipation for a wide array of vegetables.
Enjoy,
Derek and Crew
