D&V Organics CSA
Week 14
Our second planting of field tomatoes is coming on and we will be including more tomatoes in shares this week. After a short lived, but heavy yield of tomatoes from our new greenhouse and a disappointing first field tomato planting this year, we are happy to start picking a good quantity of tomatoes again. We will keep our fingers crossed as the weather is always a deciding factor in the long term picking quality of field tomatoes.
This year we have been quickly turning our fields over to prepare them for the Fall/Winter seasons. When our fields are not in use for a period of 3 or more months, it is best practice to plant a non-cash crop (cover crop) to protect the soil from erosion and improve the soil biology. It is our goal to have our fields that were used to grow Spring vegetable crops cleaned up and ready to seed beginning in September. Due to the nature of our diversified product line, having the fields cleaned up all at the same time is not possible, but we will incrementally clean up our fields and begin seeding cover crops by September. Different cover crops serve different purposes, each having their own growing conditions and season.
