D&V Organics
Fall CSA
Week 3
Our Fall greens are still looking good after last week's super cold weather. We spent the entire day on Tuesday using a type of agricultural "blanket" to cover up all of our tender greens in the field, helping to protect them from the freezing temperatures. The "blanket" or what we often refer to as row cover, provides some much needed insulation to the crops, helping to bring the day time temperatures higher and protecting the tender leaves of the greens as the frost descends onto the plants. At night the temperature under the row cover becomes the same as the ambient air temperature outside of the row cover. What is significant about the row cover, is that it protects the plants from the damaging effects of the frost, which "falls" onto the leaves and can cause damage. We suspect that the temperatures were as low as 28F out in the field, which is pretty close to the limit of what most lettuces can stand until they start showing some damage. We are looking forward to some warmer temps this week.
Enjoy,
Derek and Crew
