This weekend is proving to have perfect summer days. Sunshine, low humidity and a breeze to dry things out a bit and keep the bugs away. The "Produce Squad" has been busy harvesting. Can see the changes of season progression. The tomatoes are ripening rapidly, summer squash is becoming more scarce, cauliflowers of all colors are starting to tease us, cabbage is sizing up, winter radishes, turnips, beets and maybe carrots are growing. The late season sweet corn has tasseled and cobs are appearing. The Red Russian kale and curly kale are pretty as pictures ( if kale can be pretty). Noticed that the winter squashes are starting to become visible for their leaves are retreating leaving the fruit more visible to the warm sun.
The above photo is one of our herb gardens. We grow shiso for restaurants. The dark purple leaves are know to wrap sushi. It also makes a beautiful color display in the garden. The long red flowers are garnet red amaranth. We usually use as a micro green, but, also the adult version in flower bouquets that Gail often creates for weddings etc. Pairs beautifully with sunflowers. In the background is the retired Oliver 66 and a 3 bottom plow. Gail learned to drive tractor at 8 years old on that Oliver almost wiping out the clothes line in the yard!! The clothes line still stands!
