Here's Jade hauling another load of Brussels Sprouts out of the field. The "Produce Squad" hasn't minded the field harvest. Sitting in the Brussels Sprout plants pulling the orbs off in the warm sun seems like a privilege in these trying days of Covid. Also were harvesting late broccoli, cauliflowers of all kinds (they don't mind the frosty temperatures), kales, cabbages and tons of winter squash. The tomatoes are nearing the end. We do have cherry tomatoes on the list this week. Many in the mix are heirloom types. One is called blueberry and is rather interesting. Easy to recognize. Blue just like a big blueberry. It is best when the bottom of it turns a peach color. The weather has been great to be out in the fields. We, unfortunately, lost our late crop of sweet corn. The three frosts did the crop in. It struggled valiantly through hot dry weather, then a cool late August. It was a gamble.....last year we didn't get our first frost until Oct.
Delicata Squash is the squash of the week. We like to cut it in half lengthwise, remove the seeds, place a strip of bacon in the cavity, pile some brown sugar on top of the bacon and bake it in a 350 degree oven for about 1/2 to 3/4 hour or until a fork sticks in easily. Quick and easy. The skin on the delicata is edible too.
We have also added our winter storage crop of radishes to the list. Watermelon, Purple, Green and regular Daikon. We like to thinly slice the watermelon radish to make a sandwich. Lots of recipes out there for all the winter storage radishes. Give them a try. Good keepers in the refrigerator. We will have them available throughout the rest of the season. Plenty of time to try them all out.
Also on the list, we added Northstar Bison products. If you select any meat for your box, we will wrap it in another plastic bag because of contamination issues. Remember, if you order meat to pick it up in a timely manner. It will be frozen starting out here at the farm.
