Wow...it has been a busy week at DragSmith Farms. We started construction work inside the Red Shed. We plan to open a store in the Spring and put in a certified kitchen. Changes are farmer's survival mechanisms. Since restaurants are closing up, we are seeing a fun demand for dinners on the farm. People are asking for a store to pick up organic, local food. Also, home garden transplants that really work in our area. In relation to the home garden demand popping up we have started what we call a demonstration garden that one can stroll through with Gail and discuss how-to-dos or as it develops photos in the flowers for graduation or weddings.
On Saturday morning there was no wind predicted, therefore, we called in the "Produce Squad" plus several other amazing helpers (2 of which are 4 year Farm Share members, thanks again Austin and Bailey) and covered Greenhouse 3 with it's first layer of plastic. Gail whipped up a batch of her delicious cinnamon rolls to get the 11 of us started at 7am in the dreary fog. This was particularity a difficult job in greenhouse covering. It required 3 separate sheets of plastic. One was a part of the damaged plastic that blew out of our hands while trying to put the plastic on Greenhouse 4 in the summer. Another was an end scrape from a previous job and the third is a tricky piece that joins Greenhouse 3 and 4 together. Now, we need one more day with no wind to cover Greenhouse 3 and 4 with their 2nd layer before winter.
To help with the harvesting and to "get out of town" we were lucky to have Chef David and Chef David come for a visit. They harvested some Brussels Sprouts, winter squash and best of all helped Gail with the "family noon meal". DragSmith Farms provides lunch on Monday and Thursday for the employees and visitors that happen to be hanging out. A way to expose the workers to the wonderful food they help grow and we use the time for meetings and keep up on happenings.
