Greetings to all our Farm Share members. Give your family a hug on this beautiful day. If you need an outing, you are always welcome here. It is getting closer to the season to install wild native plants in your gardens and yards. Preparations should start now to clear the space. Hopefully, we will receive a fall rain in time to transplant the native plants in September.
We were blessed with a bit of rain the last couple of weeks. it did green the yards up and the fields don't look quite as stressed, but, yields will be extremely low. On a more fun note...while driving Daryl (the 6-wheeler) to the greenhouses yesterday, I saw two Sand Hill Cranes walking across the neighbors yard. So cool. Something not seen back in the day!
This weekend will be spend seeding fall crops. The above photo shows how Gail seeds such things as turnips, watermelon radish, purple, green and white daikons. August is the best month for this job. Less weeds and the worms don't get into the roots and cause those unsightly tunnels. Their life cycle is over. Maurice has tilled the fields into a perfect bed, then Gail takes the smaller tractor and the field transplanter to mark the rows and finally walks up and down the rows pushing the Jung seeder you see in the photo. It has two "shoes" that allow two rows about 2" apart to be seeded at a time. Each row is about 36" apart to allow the tractor and rotovator to run between the rows for weed cultivation.
Have a great week.
